A flat tyre is inconvenient, annoying, and it can occur unexpectedly at any time of day or night. However, with a little knowledge and preparation, dealing with a tyre puncture doesn’t have to be stressful! As a leading local choice for mobile tyre repairs, Elite Tyre & Autocare is here to help with fast and affordable tyre puncture repairs. Here’s our tips for safely handling a flat tyre situation.
Stay Calm and Find a Safe Location to Stop
When you realise you have a flat tyre (most likely you will hear and feel a thump and vibration followed by a flapping sound) the first and most crucial step is to remain calm and find a safe spot to pull over. Gradually slow your car down, and look for a level surface away from traffic, preferably a car park or a wide shoulder. This will help to keep you out of harm’s way while you work on the repair.
Turn On Your Hazard Lights and Apply the Parking Brake
Hazard lights will alert other drivers that something is wrong with your car and increase your visibility, keeping you safer. Once you have found a safe place to stop, ensure the parking brake is engaged to prevent the vehicle from rolling while you attend to the puncture.
Find the Necessary Tools and Spare Tyre
Locate the spare tyre and all of the required tools (jack, lug wrench etc). These tools are typically located in the boot of your vehicle, but every car is different. If you aren’t sure, you should be able to find this information in your owner’s manual. Familiarise yourself with their location and operation before you begin the changeover to save yourself time and confusion during the process.
Locate and Inspect the Punctured Tyre
Once you have the necessary tools, find the punctured tyre. Look for any visible objects, such as glass, nails, or screws embedded in the tread. If the object is still present, avoid removing it at this stage to prevent further air loss. Take note of the tyre’s condition, as severe damage will likely require professional assistance.
Jack Up Your Vehicle
It’s crucial to jack your car correctly, so check your vehicle’s manual to identify the proper jacking points. Place the jack securely beneath the car and raise it until the flat tyre is approximately 5-7 centimetres off the ground as this will provide enough clearance to remove the tyre.
Remove the Flat Tyre
Using the lug wrench, carefully loosen the lug nuts by turning them anti-clockwise. This may require some force! Once they are loose, continue to unscrew them by hand. With the lug nuts removed, gently pull the flat tyre towards you, keeping it upright to avoid damage or injury. When you have removed the tyre, make sure you lay it flat to stop it rolling away.
Install the Spare
Align the spare tyre with the wheel bolts and carefully slide it onto the wheel hub. Once the spare tyre is in place, hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern. This ensures even pressure distribution and helps prevent the wheel from tilting.
Lower the Vehicle and Tighten the Lug Nuts
Using the jack, lower the vehicle until the spare tyre touches the ground. Now, using the wrench, tighten the nuts as much as possible, still following the star pattern. Be cautious not to over-tighten, as it may damage the wheel studs.
Check the Tyre Pressure and Seek Expert Help
After securing the spare tyre, check its pressure using a tyre pressure gauge and ensure it matches the recommended levels specified in your vehicle’s manual. Remember that the spare tyre is usually a temporary solution and has limited capabilities, so visit a professional tyre shop as soon as possible to have your punctured tyre repaired or replaced.
